Don’t Break Your Budget!
Each year, parents spend tons of money on school supplies, assuming that your purchases from those supposedly handy lists will be put to good use. As a mom, I’ve learned over the years that this isn’t necessarily the case. Sure, there are plenty of items on that school supplies list your child needs, but we want to help you determine the items you really don’t need to purchase this year.
1) Last Year’s Extra Supplies
At the end of each school year, I’m shocked to see how many school supplies came back either unused or barely used. So rather than add those items to the cache of supplies for your home office or art projects, save money and stop the waste by reusing any gently used school supplies wherever possible. Start with this list and then use your imagination to expand further:
- Reams of paper
- Pencil bags
Don’t get me wrong: in my opinion, a good backpack is extremely important in the daily life of a student, but you don’t need to buy a new one each year. Unless your child’s backpack has worn out completely or is too small for the weight of that year’s course load, there is no reason a backpack can’t be used for multiple years.
And if you do need to purchase a new one, buy a size larger so your student can grow into it over the next few years.
3) Gimmicky Supplies
What do I mean by “gimmicky?” I mean taking a basic item and adding in superfluous design elements like characters, light-up features, and more. While they are attention-grabbing, these supplies typically cost more, and your kid can easily grow tired of a particular character before the school year is even over.
By sticking to the basics, you can potentially save money plus you have the ability to get additional use the next year if still in good shape.
4) Hand-held Pencil Sharpener
For my last item, I spoke with a few of my kids’ friends for their perspectives on which school supplies they thought was unnecessary. Across the board, the top answer was the hand-held pencil sharpener. The reason? Your average sharpener of this nature takes more time and is much messier than the electronic sharpener teachers already have in the room. Not to mention, younger children often have difficulty maneuvering these devices on their own.
Happy Budgeting on your school supplies this year!
