How to Thank the Military, Ideas for Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a special time to think about the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country and for our freedom. But amidst the BBQs and other festivities, we tend to lose sight of the true importance of the day. Instead, we should take time to remember our country’s fallen soldiers and thank those men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day.

Fly an American Flag.  Flying an American flag outside of your home is a simple way to show your support for our troops. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, if flying a flag on Memorial Day it should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to noon and then raised till sunset. For those who are in need of a flag, one can be purchased at retailers like Walmart or Amazon.

Write a thank-you letter. Operation Appreciation is a program offered through the Blue Star Families organization where groups or individuals can write a personal message of gratitude to a soldier, a soldier’s family, or a veteran. Another option is to post a thank-you message on Facebook on the US Military thank you page.

Become a volunteer. What better way to show your support than to become a volunteer at a nonprofit organization that supports our military? To find an organization near you, go to the Charity Navigator website, which lists a variety of organizations to volunteer for.

Make a donation to the USO  in honor or in memory of a loved one. Making a donation to the USO is a great way to show your support, lift their spirits and honor their service.

Educate our children. It’s one thing for parents to show their support, but it’s important for parents to teach our children the meaning behind Memorial Day as well.  Children can show their support through writing a special thank-you letter or coloring a picture to show their appreciation.

Donate unused cell phones. The program, Cell Phones for Soldiers, takes newer or gently used cellphones and gives them to active soldiers so they can stay connected with their families while away. Not to mention the program keeps phones from ending up in landfills, as well.
