Texas enjoys great weather nearly year ’round, and with such a big state, there’s a lot to do – especially if you’re a family with school-aged children. Let’s explore some of the more unusual outdoor adventures your family can enjoy in the Lone Star State on your next vacation.
This family-friendly event is touring the country in 2016, including several dates in Texas. The 1.5 mile course is designed for kids from 3 to 12 years of age, and it’s filled with fun inflatable obstacles that will make the adults wish they were kids again! If you’re not into running – or you need your kids to wear off any remaining energy – each race also includes Krazy Town (a basecamp of sorts), which is filled with other fun activities, food, and more!
2) The Natural Bridge Caverns
Located about halfway between New Braunfels and San Antonio, the Natural Bridge Caverns offer such a variety of activities, the whole family is bound to find something they love! This includes mining for gems, racing down an amazing zip-line, and observing the world’s largest bat emergence.
Personally, the AMAZEn’ Ranch Roundup appeals to my family the most. It is a 5,000 square foot outdoor maze that’s bound to keep the entire family lost in fun!
3) The Art Car Museum
Located in Houston, this museum is dedicated to contemporary art; however, you won’t see the traditional canvases at this location. Instead the vast majority of the art is on cars. This is a must-see if you have any car-obsessed children (or a spouse), though the vehicles are unusual enough to pique the attention of the other members of your family, too.
4) Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum
While on the subject of unusual museums, you must visit this San Antonio destination. Though you need to make an appointment, admission is free, and it’s a great opportunity to show the whole family that art can truly be found everywhere – even in the bathroom. If you take a toilet seat with you to donate for future projects, Barney will engrave it (as long as it isn’t plastic), and your name will be permanently on one of his pieces of art.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Stunt Ranch in Austin. This 22-acre facility believes in making science exciting for everyone! They offer a huge range of activities: the kids can attend Stunt Camp, while Mom and Dad are receiving Action Hero training!
The five places above only scratch the surface of what our great state can offer your family! Make sure to look a little off the beaten trail this summer, there are plenty of outdoor adventures waiting for you!
