A Texas-Sized Back-to-School Checklist

The new school year is upon us, which means it’s time for back-to-school shopping. If you haven’t purchased school supplies for your children already, this weekend is a great time to purchase what you need because it’s the Texas Tax-Free Weekend. To better prepare you for school supply shopping, here is a suggested Texas-sized back-to-school checklist that covers the entire family.

Elementary

  • #2 pencils
  • Blunt scissors
  • Markers, 1 pack
  • Composition book
  • Dry erase fine tip marker
  • Ruler
  • Glue stick
  • Eraser
  • Lysol disinfectant wipes
  • Box of Ziploc bags
  • Plastic pocket and brad folders
  • Wide rule paper
  • Box of Kleenex
  • Lunchbox
  • Backpack

Texas Extras:

While all of these school supplies are pretty standard across the nation, we Texans like to take things up a notch. For kids in elementary school, Texas parents like adding “oomph” to school supplies by monogramming their children’s initials on key items. Before school starts be sure to allow enough time to monogram hair bows, backpacks, lunch boxes, folders, pencil bags, and more.

  • Water bottle – It’s important to hydrate during the hot Texas days.
  • Umbrella – You never know when it’s going to rain in Texas.
  • Hand sanitizer – Place a small hand sanitizer inside their lunchbox to help kill germs before they eat.
  • Sunblock – Apply before school to help protect from the Texas heat during recess.
  • Mosquito repellent – Apply before school to protect from mosquito bites, which are rampant in Texas for much of the year.

Middle School

  • Erasers
  • Colored markers
  • Colored pencils
  • Glue
  • #2 pencils
  • College ruled, 3-hole punched pack of paper
  • Kleenex
  • Scissors
  • 5 subject notebook with pockets
  • Pencil case
  • Pocket folders
  • Ballpoint pens
  • Glue sticks
  • Handheld pencil sharpener
  • Composition book

Texas Extras

As we know, football is life in Texas, and it starts in middle school as a school sport. Rather than waiting till the season begins, it may be helpful to purchase some key items like cleats, mouth guards, and jockstraps now rather than waiting till everything is close to sold out when the season begins.

  • Sunblock – To protect from the hot Texas sun during after-school sports.
  • Water bottle – To stay hydrated if playing after-school sports.
  • Umbrella – You never know when it’s going to rain in Texas.
  • Hand sanitizer – Place a small hand sanitizer inside their lunchbox to help kill germs before they eat.

High School

  • #2 pencils
  • Black and blue pens
  • Eraser
  • Highlighters
  • Pencil sharpener
  • White out
  • Ruler
  • Two 3-ring binders (1 ½”)
  • Spiral notebooks
  • Index cards, pack of 100
  • Graphing paper
  • Bottom pocket folders
  • Loose leaf paper, college rule

Texas extras:

  • Football accessories – Same as those mentioned above.
  • Water bottle and plenty of Gatorade – For kids playing sports outdoors in the hot Texas sun.
  • Jon Hart backpack, pencil bag, etc. – This Texas-born brand is big among Texas high school kids. And surprise, surprise, it comes monogrammed!

Hopefully, this list proves helpful to you as you prepare for the 2015-16 school year, but please check your individual school’s list for a complete supply list.
