Welcome to “What Do I Buy and When?” – our monthly series geared towards helping you make smarter buying decisions. Each month, you’ll learn which items retailers price to sell and which ones aren’t so you can find the best deals throughout the year. Our information is gathered from sites like DealNews and DailyFinance, places that search the retail world to find the best and worst deals. We want to help you save money!
August means back-to-school time, which means it’s also “buyers beware” time, as you want to scour all possible opportunities to save on purchasing what your family needs for the new school year.
Check out our list of what you should – and should not – buy this month!
It should be no surprise that all manner of back-to-school gear is heavily discounted in August. Items like backpacks, uniforms, paper, notebooks, and pens will be discounted up to 30% or more. Shoppers can find these discounts at big name retailers like Target, Walmart, and Office Depot.
And even if you are not in the market for school supplies, the huge discounts make this a great opportunity to stock up on office supplies.
Most retailers include laptops under the back-to-school umbrella, so they receive generous discounts this month to entice students as they head back to high school or college. For example, Best Buy is offering up to $150 off select computers as well as an additional $150 off other items in its College Student Deals program.
Just in time for a brand-new school wardrobe, summer fashions can now be purchased at steeply discounted prices. Stores clear out the summer stock in August to make room for the soon-arriving fall inventory.
And since you live in Texas, there’s plenty of warm weather left in the year, which means you and your kids will have plenty more days to sport your new clothes.
Smartphones & Tablets
While you may be seeing a big push from retailers to upgrade your smartphone or tablet; if you want to find better discounts, we recommend that you wait just a few months longer. According to dealnews, companies like Apple and Amazon tend to release their newest models in September or October, so, if you can patiently wait a couple more months, you should be able to then purchase an older model at a nice discount.
Hands down, the best time to purchase a TV is in November during Black Friday deals. So if you can refrain from purchasing one until then, your wallet will benefit.
