Welcome to “What Do I Buy and When?” – our monthly series geared towards helping you make smarter buying decisions. Each month, you’ll learn which items retailers price to sell and which ones aren’t so you can find the best deals throughout the year. Our information is gathered from sites like DealNews and DailyFinance, places that search the retail world to find the best and worst deals. We want to help you save money!
April’s bright colors and sunshine motivates people to get out and shop as a way to enjoy the weather. But before you break out your wallet, be sure to check out this month’s shopping guide to ensure the items you want to purchase are priced to sell.
Tax Day Freebies
Many popular retailers around the country give back to Americans each year on Tax Day (April 15) with a range of gifts. Restaurants and businesses ranging from Great American Cookies and Hard Rock Café to Staples offer free items like cookies and burgers as a way to help you celebrate paying your annual taxes. DealNews.com compiled a full list of retailers offering discounts and free stuff on Tax Day.
The rest of last winter’s inventory is heavily discounted this month, so you might want to stock up on winter clothing for next season.
As for current spring clothing lines, April is a good time to start purchasing your new wardrobe. The rule of thumb for savings is to wait at least two months before purchasing clothes from that particular season. Since February was when most stores rolled out their spring lines, April is a good time to start purchasing spring wear with discounts of around 20-30% off. Of course, for those of you who can wait another month, the discounts could be even greater in May.
April is a great time to book a trip for the summer. Airlines like Southwest are offering one-way deals for as low as $69, while other airlines are offering the ability to earn additional miles when purchasing a flight.
If you aren’t ready to book a flight in April, cheapair.com provides this interesting tip: The most optimal time to book a flight is 112 to 21 days out before your planned trip. They found that time to be the cheapest compared to booking the flight farther out from or closer to the departure date, which ended up being more expensive.
Apple Watch at an Apple Store
Apple announced its new watch bands earlier in 2016 while also slashing $50 off the retail price of its Apple Watch in its stores. While $50 off is nice, according to DealNews, retailers such as Target and Best Buy are offering even steeper discounts. Best Buy has advertised discounted Apple Watches at $249, while Target has even offered $100 off the price. So if you are in market for an Apple Watch, be sure to watch out for deals at those retailers – and skip the crowded lines at your local Apple Store.
This just isn’t a good month for consumer electronics like laptops. Instead, you’ll begin to see deals on laptops starting in June, as stores start to advertise “back-to-school” deals. And to find the best price, you’re better off waiting as far into August as you can.
Mattresses, Appliances, and Tools
For those in the market for an item from one of these department store mainstays, April isn’t your month. We recommend waiting until Memorial Day Sales in May to make a purchase, as that’s when these items will be more heavily discounted.
