4 Top Fall and Winter Road Trips in Texas

For what we lack in terms of pleasant weather during the hot and humid summer months, Texas makes up for during our fall and winter months . The weather is beautiful and mild compared to the north and west of the United States, which gives us a few months to get outside and appreciate all the Lone Star State has to offer. And the best way to do this is to take road trips with friends and family! Check out these four recommendations for excellent road trips to take so you can experience the best that Texas weather has to offer.

Big Bend National Park

If you love the outdoors, be prepared to spend a solid week exploring this beautiful Texas park.

While it is quite a long road trip, it is worth it! Located out about 10 hours west of Houston and about nine from Dallas, Big Bend is one of the most beautiful areas of Texas. The fall, winter, and even spring are the best times to visit and provide such diverse yet beautiful views.

About the size of Rhode Island, the park contains plenty of hike and bike trails that wind through canyons and mountains offering breathtaking views. Tired of hiking? Well, enjoy a camel-back tour through the beautiful Monahans Sandhills State Park or horseback tour through the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

You won’t want to miss out on one of the best views in Texas by riding on the Wyler Aerial Tramway at Franklin Mountains State Park. It’s a gondola that takes visitors to the top of Ranger Peak, which is 5,632 feet above sea level. There is so much to do that makes it worth such a long road trip!

Bandera

You don’t have to be a cowboy to enjoy Bandera, but it probably doesn’t hurt.

For those looking for a little cowboy culture then head to the “Cowboy Capital of the World” for a step back in time to the Wild West days. In Bandera, visitors can enjoy the rustic yet beautiful landscape where “traffic consists of horses and motorcycles as often as cars and trucks.”

Take a horseback ride through the hillside, enjoy live music at a local honky-tonk, or have fun at a real Dude Ranch. It’s a place to relax and let the stress melt away.

The Piney Woods

Texas isn’t all cowboys, dust, and wide-open spaces. Take a look at this lush greenery!

It’s time to head the opposite direction towards East Texas to the beautiful Piney Woods area. While the Piney Woods are beautiful to visit all year around, the fall is a special time to visit due to the beautiful changing foliage, which peaks around late October to early November.

And while there’s much to do in the surrounding area, Tyler, TX is especially lovely in October, thanks to “Texas’ most beautiful event” – the Rose Festival in Tyler. Visitors can enjoy charming events like the Queen’s Coronation, the Rose Show, the Queen’s Tea, the Rose Parade and more.

Palo Duro Canyon

But yes – Texas does have LOTS of lovely outdoor attractions – including this wonderful geological formation!

Proclaimed the Grand Canyon of Texas, all good Texans should visit the Palo Duro Canyon, the country’s second largest canyon. Located up in the Texas Panhandle, visitors can explore the canyon by foot, horse, bike, or even by car. In addition to miles of hiking trails, visitors can camp, geocache, and bird watch. Though it’s better to go during the cooler months, those who visit during the summer months, be sure to stay to enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical Texas.
