First Choice Power Fund Awards Grants to Texas Nonprofits
(FORT WORTH, TEXAS) – The nonprofit First Choice Power Fund awarded $30,000 to Gulf Coast-area nonprofits benefiting youth, seniors and adults. The fund awarded $47,000 to Texas nonprofits this year.
"These nonprofits' programs bring valuable resources to those in our state who need them most," said Diane Harrison Ogawa, executive director of the First Choice Power Fund, a division of the PNM Resources Foundation. "The First Choice Power Fund is proud to partner with these organizations to help build a stronger and brighter future for our state."
The First Choice Power Fund is a nonprofit division of the PNM Resources Foundation, which seeks to improve the quality of life in Texas communities through First Choice Power Partnership Grants. Applications for the annual grants were due in June, and 34 nonprofits in Texas communities served by First Choice Power applied.
The local programs funded are:
- Gulf Coast Wildlife Rescue in Angleton, $5,000 for the upgrade of educational presentation materials. Thousands of students, civic organizations, scouts and churches will enjoy free educational programs about what to do if they find injured or orphaned wildlife, when and why they should or should not rescue the bird or animal, how to humanely deal with nuisance wildlife and how to protect and preserve the environment where wildlife lives.
- Junior Achievement Of Brazoria County in Angleton, $5,000 for EARS: Effort for At Risk Students. These after-school sessions will target at-risk students and Title I criteria. The seven school districts will welcome JA into their classrooms to teach economics, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and leadership. At risk-students will undergo a six-week program about basic money management, personal economics, career investigation, interdependent workings of family, community and businesses.
- Keep Pearland Beautiful in Pearland, $5,000 for trees. The grant will provide trees for city roadway-landscaping projects and for citizens wishing to plant trees. It also helps establish an environmental educational center at the farm to teach the community about the importance of trees and the environment. Keep Pearland Beautiful is working with City of Pearland Parks and Recreation Department and Brazoria County Drainage District No. 4.
- Sweeny United in Sweeny, $5,000 for materials for home repairs. The grant will provide materials for home repairs for the eligible elderly, disadvantaged and disabled on a no-charge basis.
