Defeat The 100-Degree Texas Heat

First Choice Power’s Energy-Saving Tips
To Stay Cool, Save Energy

(FORT WORTH, TEXAS) – First Choice Power provides Simply Better summer energy-saving tips to help Texans stay cool – and save energy – as the first wave of 100-degree days hit North Texas this week.

As you adjust your thermostat to keep cool, remember these five low- and no-cost energy-saving tips to be energy efficient save money and stay cool.

“Energy efficiency makes sense year-round, but it can really pay off during the sweltering heat in the summer,” said Jeff Weiser, president of First Choice Power. “First Choice Power wants to equip our customers and the community with easy ways to be energy efficient.”

Five Simply Better Summer Energy-Saving Tips

  1. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher and increase the temperature about 8 degrees when your house is empty. For every degree cooler you set your thermostat, you use about 3 percent more energy. (A programmable thermostat can adjust the temperature for you.)
  2. Use floor and ceiling fans to make the room feel about 4 degrees cooler. If you use ceiling fans, you can turn the thermostat up a degree or two and keep the same cool feeling while using less energy.
  3. Replace your air-conditioning filter each month to maximize its operating efficiency and reduce cooling costs as much as 10 percent.
  4. Caulk and weather-strip leaks around windows and doors to prevent cool air from escaping. You can save 10 percent or more by reducing cracks in your ceilings, walls and windows.
  5. Close drapes or blinds to block direct sunlight and reduce the amount of heat entering your home. Windows can account for 10 percent to 15 percent of your heating and air-conditioning bill.
