Energy savings in the pool

Owning a pool or spa can be a costly endeavor, but there are a few steps you can take to save on energy usage and keep more money in your pocket.

  • Regularly check your swimming pool pump motor to make sure it is operating properly. Pentair Pools has an online calculator that shows you how much energy your pool pump uses, how much it costs you and the difference an energy efficient pump can make. Visit www.FirstChoicePower.com/poolcalculator.
  • Reduce the running time of the pump to the minimum it takes to maintain the cleanliness of your pool. You can install an inexpensive timer on your pump to automate the process and eliminate the necessity of you remembering to turn it on and off.
  • In colder months, covering your pool or spa with an insulated cover when not in use will reduce the amount of energy you need to heat the water. Covering them in the summer will keep it cleaner by keeping leaves and other debris out.
  • Reduce the temperature or turn off the heater when not in use.
  • If you are purchasing a spa or pool, look for the amount of insulation applied directly to the fiberglass or wood that holds the water. This will slow heat loss and help maintain water temperature with less energy.
