Energy savings in the bathroom

One of the biggest areas for saving electricity in the bathroom is the lighting.

  • Always turn off the lights when you leave the bathroom.
  • Replace light bulbs with lower wattage bulbs, i.e., replace a 100-watt bulb with a 60-watt.
  • For even greater savings replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Find out more about CFL bulbs.

You also can save energy by making a few minor changes to your windows if your bathroom has any.

While it’s not typically located in your bathroom, the electric water heater plays a significant role here. Find out how to save energy with your water heater. A lot of that hot water will be used in the shower.

Low-flow is the way to go

Older showerheads use around 5 to 8 gallons of water per minute so a 10-minute shower would use between 50 to 80 gallons. A new low-flow showerhead uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute so a 10-minute shower will use around 25 gallons.

Collect the water that is flowing while adjusting the temperature to use for watering plants for additional efficiencies.

Don’t be a drip

Repair all leaky faucets. A leak can waste gallons of water. If it's a hot water faucet, you are wasting energy heating water that is going down the drain.
