Any type of rate plan—variable, fixed or index—can also be a green energy plan. With a green energy plan, you’re buying green electricity that was generated from renewable sources—usually solar or wind power. This means it doesn’t generate carbon emissions or air pollution. And no, the actual electrons aren’t green. But wouldn’t that be neat if they were?
Buying green energy is a great way to help the environment and help take care of our great state. When you’re looking at a green energy plan, be sure to check what percent of the electricity is actually green. At First Choice Power, we’re proud that our green energy plans are 100% renewable energy. Not only that, but all of the renewable energy we buy was generated right here in Texas, so it not only benefits the Texas environment but also our local economy.
People often ask us how green electricity is kept separate from the regular electricity. The answer is, it isn’t. Whether produced by renewable energy generators like a wind farm or traditionally generated using fossil fuels, all the electricity is connected to the same grid and travels over the same wires. So someone on a green energy plan is getting the same electricity as a person on a regular plan.
The difference is how the green electricity is generated. We look at how much electricity that customers on our green energy plans are using and make sure we’ve bought enough electricity from green energy generators for them. The more customers who choose green energy plans, the more green energy we’re buying and the less regular electricity is being generated from fossil fuels. So while you might not be receiving those “green” electrons at your home, that green power is now on the grid.
