Who's Looking Out for Me

Who's Looking Out for Me

In addition to everything we do to put you first, two Texas state agencies are looking out for you. They protect your rights and make sure the Texas power grid keeps electricity humming from the power plants and wind farms of Texas all the way to your home or business.

  • The Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUC) was formed in 1975 to watch over several types of utilities, including the electric and telephone industries. The PUC sets the rules for the poles and wires companies (TDSPs) that deliver power to your house. They decide the rates for transmission and distribution services and make all the reliability and safety standards. The PUC also handles licensing and rules enforcement for First Choice Power and other companies that sell electricity.
  • The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) watches over the reliability and security of the state's power grid. ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to over 22 million Texas customers – that's a whopping 85% of the state's electric load, covering 75% of the state. ERCOT controls all the power on a giant electric grid made up of 40,000 miles of transmission lines and more than 550 power generation units. When people switch electricity providers, the new provider contacts ERCOT to take care of the actual switch.
