Shooting for the Moon

Sometimes, the people who need our help the most are the ones who can't help themselves. According to Linda Gonzalez, executive director of CASA of Hidalgo County, the number of abused and neglected children grew significantly last year, which means that more children came into the court system. CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, was founded in 1994 to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children, by providing trained and caring volunteers who work with families, schools, Child Protective Services and the courts to provide each child a safe, nurturing and permanent home.

This February, First Choice Power is proud to be the first sponsor of CASA's "Shooting Down Child Abuse" skeet shooting tournament. The event will not only raise funds to support CASA throughout 2012 but also raise awareness of child abuse and ways that the community can help stop it.

Sonia Guajardo-Lopez, First Choice Power business development manager for Hidalgo County, is working on the advertising and promotion for the event. Sonia also recently helped CASA analyze and evaluate its electric bill. By moving from a month-to-month plan with higher rates to a lower rate contract, CASA was able to significantly reduce its monthly bills, leaving more money in the budget to help the kids CASA serves.

"We are very excited to be working with a company that has the heart and the passion to help our kids," Gonzalez said.
