Beto Marroquin Wins Texas City Tamale Contest
If you’ve been following First Choice Power’s 2011 Texas Tamale Series, you’ll remember that Mission firefighter Adrian Villarreal took the Mission title by eating 18 tamales in 12 minutes.
Now, Beto Marroquin has won the Texas City showdown by eating an impressive 34 tamales in 12 minutes. The contest was held on Saturday night between sets at the Texas City Music Fest. Eaters included members of the fire and police departments, local celebrities and other brave folks who wanted to eat a bunch of tamales. The entry fee was $25 per eater, and eaters collected per-tamale sponsorships from friends and family to raise additional funds. The $2,500 that was raised was donated to the Galveston-Mainland United Way as part of our Food First™ program.
Congratulations, Beto!
