Hot Times in Edinburg
First Choice Power was happy to sponsor the Jalapeño Golf Classic Tournament at the Los Lagos Golf Course in Edinburg. This was the 11th year for the event, which raised more than $10,000 for the McAllen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an organization that encourages minority-owned businesses in the Rio Grande Valley.
About 90 golfers took to the course on Saturday morning for the round-robin tournament, including Texas Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. The beautiful Los Lagos Course (The Lakes Course) lived up to its name — several players joked that they should have given a prize to the player who lost the most balls in the water features.
At the end of the day, two lucky participants were randomly chosen to participate in the $100,000 shootout contest — the chance to make a hole-in-one from 165 yards to win $100,000! No one took home the prize, and we’re already practicing for next year so we can donate the prize to our Food First program.
Our cheerful recycling boxes were a fixture around the greens, giving golfers a worry-free place to deposit their cans and bottles.
“This was the first year we have ever had recycling boxes out on the course,” said Cynthia Sakulenzki, president and CEO of the McAllen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “The chamber is a true believer in recycling, and we truly appreciated First Choice Power for bringing the boxes out. It was a special treat for us.”
