Taking Action During Hunger Action Month
You’ve probably heard us talk about our Food First™ to help fight hunger here in Texas. Our goal is to provide 1 million meals for Texans in need. Well, last month was Hunger Action Month, and we’re pretty proud of the strides we were able to make. By encouraging donations through several different projects, First Choice Power helped collect more than 35,000 meals for people right here in Texas. To date, we’ve provided more than 100,000 meals toward our million-meal goal.
First Choice Power’s Food First™ initiatives during Hunger Action Month included:
- A Facebook poll that awarded a $1,000 donation to East Texas Food Bank
- A “Clash of the Cans” food drive rivalry between Texas City and Galveston Ball high schools, resulting in 10,889 pounds of food.
- Social media campaigns that awarded one meal for each new follower on Facebook and Twitter, plus a $1,378 donation to Feeding America® (one for every follower of First Choice Power)
- A canned food drive competition among the troops of the Texas Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America at the Big Country Balloon Fest, resulting in more than 2,000 meals.
- Monthly employee volunteers prepared meals at a soup kitchen, food pantry and Meals on Wheels.

We want to give a big thanks to all of our friends, customers and community partners who donated food, dollars and time to help make such a difference. We’re continuing our Food First efforts this fall with a United Way canned food drive for employees, more fun community events, and monthly Facebook poll to benefit Texas food banks. Be sure to vote online and meet us at events! Because when we work together, the donations we make can really improve lives for thousands of hungry Texans.
