Girls Ruled on 9.10.11
On Sept. 10, 2011, not only was the date really neat (9/10/11), but it was the day the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas chose to celebrate their commitment to community for another year of service. 9.10.11 was designed to show all Girl Scouts how a small contribution can make a major impact on their local communities.
This year, First Choice Power sponsored the celebration and helped the girls raise awareness of two important issues—hunger and energy conservation. Playing off the 9.10.11 date, the program encouraged girls to:
-
Do nine things to raise awareness about hunger
-
Collect and donate 10 or more items of food to a local food pantry
-
Celebrate the “electric 11” by choosing 11 ways to make their homes more energy efficient
The 2,000 girls who took part in the program collected more than 24,000 meals to be donated to food banks across North Texas as part of First Choice Power’s Food First™ program to end hunger. Troop 75686 from Pittsburg collected the most food, 950 pounds, and won a pizza party for the entire troop. Gabby Gafford of Troop 1747 collected 144 items, the most for an individual girl. In addition to the satisfaction of helping others, all the girls who took part earned a special 9.10.11 patch designed by First Choice Power.
“The 9.10.11 program was such an exciting and enriching opportunity for our girls to learn about important issues, like fighting hunger and conserving energy, that are affecting their communities every day,” said Kimilee Gould, program manager for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. “Many parents and troop leaders have already expressed how much the girls enjoyed the project and how much they all learned through the process.”
