Saying Goodbye to Hunger
After our initial Food First™ program kick-off event in Lufkin on June 11 we were excited to McAllen to get the program started there as well. One of our programs goals is to distribute 1 million meals to families across the state by this time next year. In McAllen, our partnership with the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley will allow us to distribute at least 2,000 of these meals during the summer to kids who take part in the free lunch program during the school year.
On Fridays, kids who attend the summer program will be able to pick up a bag of healthy food such as granola bars, canned lasagna, fruit cups, cereal, peanut butter and other non-perishable items to help their family get through the week. We’ve even found biodegradable bags for the meals to go out in, so we can help families without hurting the environment.
First Choice Power employee Sonia Guajardo-Lopez has already been volunteering for the Food Band of the Rio Grande Valley and is proud to serve on the board of its Empty Bowls fundraiser. Most recently, Sonia participated in the Ride Against Hunger, where First Choice Power provided bags for all the cyclists.
