Cubs Collecting Cans for a Cause
The Clifton Cubs are known for their fighting spirit, but this fall, they also were known for fighting hunger. In recognition of September as Hunger Action Month, First Choice Power partnered with Clifton High students to replenish the empty shelves of the Clifton Food Bank. First Choice Power donated $500 to match the 5,200 cans that the students collected to help “Pound Hunger.”
More recently, Clifton ISD students in grades K-12 worked together to collect 8,200 pounds of non-perishable food items and almost $1,000 cash for the local “Food for Families” program. As part of a matching challenge grant, First Choice Power donated $1,500 in support of our Food First™ program to the Clifton Food Bank.
The Clifton ISD challenge was part of “Food for Families,” an annual canned food drive conducted in the Clifton area that includes partnerships with H-E-B, Channel 10 in Waco and the Boy Scouts of the U.S.A. The Cubs, First Choice Power and other community donations totaled more than 44,000 meals for the Clifton Food Bank, the most that has ever been given. Last year’s record was about 32,000 pounds.
And the community needs it – the seven county agencies helping those in need, including Helping Hand, Valley Mills Food Pantry and the Clifton Food Pantry, distribute 1 million pounds of food per year. Each month, the Clifton Food Bank distributes around 5,000-6,000 pounds of food to 400 families. The food bank has been helping area families for close to 20 years, with the biggest need in the winter months after Christmas and right before school starts.
