We Love Foodball
Nothing says Texas like football. And nothing says football like…canned food? In Galveston and Texas City, they know that taking part in the First Choice Power’s Clash of the Cans competition adds another layer of fun to a long-standing team rivalry. This was the second year Texas City High School and Galveston Ball High School have faced off in the canned food drive competition.
Here’s how it worked: in the two weeks leading up to the big Friday night game, the Texas City Stingarees and the Galveston Ball Tornadoes each gathered cans and non-perishable food items for our Food First™ program. The night of the game, we weighed the donations and named a winner.
This year, Texas City won both the food drive competition and the football game. But the real winner was a great local organization — Galveston County Food Bank – Gleanings From the Harvest, a food bank that helps hungry Texans living right in these communities.
Together, Texas City High School and Galveston Ball High School raised more than 6,000 pounds of food. To celebrate, First Choice Power awarded Texas City with a four-foot tall trophy during halftime. We also supplied both schools with $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded to seniors who demonstrate outstanding community service.
Congratulations to all of the students who participated at both of these schools! Your generous efforts are helping raise spirits and fight hunger in our local communities.
