Making Friday Night a Little Brighter
This year, First Choice Power is thrilled to kick off our Clash of the Cans competition, a battle between that amps up the football rivalries between high schools across Texas, challenging them to gather the most cans and non-perishable food items for our Food First™ program.
The competition got started on Friday, Oct. 1, as the Texas City Stingarees faced off against the Galveston Ball Tornadoes. Each high school, supported by younger students in the districts, hustled to bring the most food. The donations were for the Gleanings From the Harvest/Galveston County Food Bank, which helps hungry Texans living right in these communities.
We want to make sure to give a shout out to all the schools that participated, including:
Galveston Ball High School
Texas City High School
Blocker Middle School
Levi Fry Intermediate
Heights Elementary
Texas City PreK Head Start
Kohfeldt Elementary
Northside Elementary
Roosevelt Wilson Elementary
“This event was like no other,” said Shawn Babbs, who works in the new First Choice Power store in Texas City. “Both cities were impacted by Hurricane Ike, and everyone knows how working together can solve many problems, like helping families who were affected."
Galveston Ball High was victorious, earning a 4-foot-tall trophy during halftime as well as a $1,000 scholarship for a college-bound senior demonstrating community service engagement. Texas City put up an admirable fight, and also received a $1,000 scholarship. In terms of football, Texas City won their first game of the season, besting Ball High 32-14.

“The canned food rivalry between Texas City and Galveston provided a fun, creative way for our community to raise awareness and fight hunger,” said Mark Davis, executive director of Gleanings From The Harvest/Galveston County Food Bank. “I was especially thrilled with the response from the students, who collected more than 10,500 pounds of food. It is the largest 10-day drive we’ve ever had at the food bank benefiting those most in need in our community.”
Stay tuned for our next Clash of the Cans events across Texas – we hope you’ll come on out to see some great football and donate to a great cause.
