Grand Champions Against Hunger
On June 1 the 2011 Central Texas Youth Fair and Rodeo kicked off in Clifton. This year marked the 80th anniversary of the event, which got its start in 1931 and was first chartered in 1937. The First Choice Power team was excited to be on hand to sponsor the Barn and Projects.
As is the tradition, First Choice Power business development manager Todd Clift was on hand to help with Saturday’s livestock auction benefiting the Bosque County 4-H. This year, his participation was a double win for the community. In years past, Todd has partnered with local businesses to buy a pig to support local kids in the 4-H program. This year, First Choice Power purchased not only a pig but also a grand champion steer. The meat – 800 pounds of beef and 170 pounds of pork – will be donated to the North Bosque Helping Hands Food Pantry as part of our Food First program to stop hunger here in Texas. Because the nonprofit doesn’t have a refrigerator or freezer big enough to store all that meat, the portion not distributed to clients in need will be sold as a fund-raiser to help the food pantry.
"This is just a great example of the commitment First Choice Power has made to Bosque County,” said Paulette McGlamery of North Bosque Helping Hands. “Not only are they supportive of the youth and their activities, but the donation of the meat to the food pantries shows their concern for all the citizens. Many families will benefit from their generosity.”
First Choice Power intern Kallie Morris had a great time helping at the auction. “There is no greater feeling than the one you get when you feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself,” Kallie said. “This type of camaraderie is comparable to what you have when you grow up in a small town. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the fair, but more than that, I enjoyed representing First Choice Power in their effort to give back.”
It’s those kind of good deeds that got Todd nominated for a Volunteer of Excellence Award by the Central Texas Youth Fair. Way to go, Todd! We’re all very proud to work with you.
