Buck Up
When it comes to big bucks, y’all aren’t messing around. There were about 80 entries in this year’s Central Texas Big Buck Contest, which earned close to $2,000 for the Clifton Chamber of Commerce. Everyone who entered got a First Choice Power cap, as well as the chance to win big prizes, not to mention priceless honor and recognition.
This year’s grand prize winner was Greg Dalchau, who won a Savage package with a scope 25-06 for his 71.625-point buck. Brad Gordon won a Stoeger over and under shotgun as second place prize for his 69.875-point buck. A 68-point buck won Kenneth Ferguson third place and a Mossberg 270. Twenty great prizes, including gift certificates, nature-themed artwork prints and even a corn feeder, were awarded in all.
Bucks taken in Bosque, Coryell, Erath, Hamilton, Hill, Johnson, McLellan and Somervell counties were eligible. Hunters signed up at the beginning of deer season, and then brought their properly tagged buck to the Clifton Feed & Service Center at Hwy 219 in Clifton within 72 hours to get them scored. First Choice Power was a Gold Sponsor of the event, and our business development manager Todd Clift was the judge. "The contest was great this year,” Todd said. “We got some of the largest bucks that have been brought in over the five years that they’ve been doing the contest.”
The bucks were bigger, and so were the prizes. In fact, this is the largest big buck contest in Central Texas based on prizes given. While the contest raises money for the Clifton Chamber of Commerce, it’s also a way that the chamber can give something back to the hunters who flock to Bosque County during deer season.
The contest will be back at the same time next year with the opening of deer season. To read the full rules, scoring system and get more information, visit http://www.cliftonfeed.com/clifton_chamber_big_buck_rules.htm.
