These Kids Are Leaders!
Last year, we had a blast sponsoring the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Regional Conference, this year was just as fun! The national nonprofit organization encourages leadership through family and consumer sciences education for students in grades 7-12.
This year, the conference was held at the Anatole Hilton in Dallas. With information sessions covering topics like stopping violence, preventing obesity and underage drinking, financial fitness and more, the conference provided a chance for the students in attendance to become certified Peer Educators.
This year, First Choice Power employee Brian Mente did a great presentation on climate change. The high school peer leaders in his group participated in an activity that identified species in 11 different ecoregions of the United States and examined how they are being affected by climate change.
The students raised more than 2,000 non-perishable food items for the Christian Community Action food pantry and the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Lewisville. The organizations were extremely grateful for the food—at the Salvation Army, a woman cried when we dropped off the donations because their shelves were so empty. The donations were all counted as part of our Food First™ program to end hunger here in Texas.
