Have you heard of Earth Hour? This is a symbolic movement in support of climate change led by the World Wildlife Fund.
On Saturday, March 27 at 8:30 p.m. CT, you can join hundreds of millions of people around the world in a call for action on climate change by turning off your lights for one hour.
“The movement symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in this fight, protecting our future and that of future generations,” the Earth Hour Web site say.
Nearly one billion people turned “off” for Earth Hour 2009 –4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents, including the Empire State Building; Brooklyn Bridge; Las Vegas Strip; United Nations Headquarters; Golden Gate Bridge; Seattle’s Space Needle; Gateway Arch in St. Louis; St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City; Big Ben and Houses of Parliament in London; Elysee Palace and Eiffel Tower in Paris; Beijing’s Birds Nest and Water Cube; Symphony of Lights in Hong Kong; and Sydney’s Opera House.
This year, 98 Texas businesses, 34 Texas organizations and 5 Texas cities have signed up to participate. The site also tracks individual commitments.
The Earth Hour Web site also has tips on how you can make a difference year-round such as recycling, replacing light bulbs with CFLs and taking public transportation.
Did you last year? First Choice Power would like you to participate in Earth Hour 2010. All we ask is that you don’t turn your lights off more than 5 minutes as suggested. It reduces the amount of money we make.
