One of the easiest and cheapest ways to save energy is by unplugging appliances, such as your TV, when they are not in use.
Even though your TV is not on, it is still using what is ofen called “vampire” or “phantom” power.
The EPA estimates that vampire power accounts for 5 percent of energy use in the county.
How do you save that on your electric bill?
It’s easy: Unplug appliances when they are not in use.
Unplug the toaster when you’re done cooking your toast. Unplug the TV when you’re done watching your favovite show. Unplug the hair dryer when you’re done with your do.
Have lots of appliances on one surge protector? The same applies for the surge protector. It is using vampire energy, too. But there’s an even easier sollution here. You can simply flip the switch on the surge protector and save the vampire energy from all the appliances on the strip.
I think these are great tips!! I have one question what should my thermostat be set at to save energy?
Great question, Carmen! The generally recommended temperature is 78° F to 80° F for summer and 68° F to 70° F for winter months. For each degree your thermostat is set below 78°F, your electricity use increases by about 3%. In the winter, the recommended setting is 68°F. For each degree above 68°F that you set your thermostat, your electricity use increases by about 3%. Hope that helps!
