Is First Choice going to begin installing Smart Meters? If so, when can we expect them to be installed in Elgin, TX?
Will they operate with Google’s PowerMeter program to allow customers to view detailed reports of their own usage?
Also, will you use them to control our power usage–reducing power to us during peak power use times, for example? How else do you plan to use these meters? What are the benefits?
Thank you for visiting the First Choice Power blog and submitting a question.
First Choice Power and other retail electricity providers (REPs) do not install or provision electronic AMS (aka “smart”) meters. The schedule for installation, the actual installation and all ongoing maintenance is managed by the Transmission and Distribution Service Providers. Elgin is part of ONCOR’s service territory. You can visit the ONCOR Web site and input your ESIID to be advised of the AMS meter installation time frame/window for your service location.
First Choice Power is developing programs over the coming months that will offer enhanced tools and product alternatives to assist customers in effectively managing their energy usage. Learn more about our Control First prepaid product (www.FirstChoicePower.com/controlfirst) that uses AMS meters.
The Texas portal to provision consumers’ energy monitoring devices and link them to the their actual usage data will enter into its first phase of operation after Jan. 31, 2010. Additionally, Google is in the pilot phase of testing its Power Meter testing now, so it is not yet available to the general public. It is our understanding that once Google completes its testing and makes its product available to the general public, this energy management tool will be functional via the Texas portal. However, that information would need to be confirmed directly with Google and with ONCOR at the appropriate time.
We look forward to working with our customers to utilize this new technology to help them better manage their energy usage.
