Two months after launching First Choice Power’s Food First campaign, we’ve wrapped up our first-of-its kind summer bag program benefiting kids across Texas. Last week we celebrated our ninth and final (for the summer) Food First bag distribution. We’ve told you about our partnerships in the Rio Grande Valley, West Texas and East Texas, where, most recently, we invited Lufkin media to see our program in action.
A little background on our food bank bag partnerships: each summer, Monday through Friday, local community organizations provide lunch for needy children in their area. This summer, First Choice Power also offered kids in those communities a take-home bag of food to last them through the weekend.
In total, our three food bank partnerships allowed us to distribute Food First bags at nine sites across the state, providing nearly 25,000 meals to kids this summer.
Also, over the weekend in East Texas, First Choice Power was the proud sponsors of the Great Texas Mud Race in Nacogdoches. In honor of each person who attended the race, we donated a meal to the East Texas Food Bank’s partner agency, Harvest House.
“Every week we distribute an average of 10,000 pounds of produce,” said Norman Edwards, executive director of Harvest House. “As the only distribution site in the city of Nacogdoches, Harvest House serves an average of 300 families weekly.”

Food First also is becoming more and more part of our company culture. From preparing meals at food pantries and volunteering at soup kitchens, to supporting Meals on Wheels and participating on food bank boards, our employees are activating Food First in their own lives. How cool is that?
And you can help us fight hunger, too. Earlier this month First Choice Power launched a Food First poll on our Facebook page. Here’s how it works: Vote daily for the food bank in your area, and we’ll award $1,000 every month to the food bank with the most votes.
Fighting hunger is important. Texas needs our help. Together we can make a difference.
