Aside from spending time with our families, eating a delicious turkey feast, and watching countless football games, there is plenty more to the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a fabulous time of year that reminds us just how much we are thankful for, and how important it is to share that with others. A great way to share gratitude is by giving back to the community, something First Choice Power understands well.
First Choice Power awards Reduce Your Use™ Grants to Texas schools and nonprofits. These grants go towards purchasing or installing energy efficient products and/or services to help lower energy costs. This fall, First Choice Power awarded more than $61,000 to local organizations like Families in Crisis, Hope Foundation for Retarded Children, Adult Reading Center Inc., David E. Smith Elementary School, and the Lake Whitney Arts Association, just to name a few. The grant recipients should save a total of $70,000 on energy bills over the next four years! Visit www.doe.gov to learn more.
These grants help fund improvements that reduce energy usage and lower energy bills. So with the money saved on energy bills, these organizations have more money to spend on the community and the people who need it most. For instance, Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School plans to use grant funds to help construct an outdoor classroom for students to perform science experiments as well as observe and enjoy nature. In total, the projects funded by these grants will impact almost 1.2 million people.
See it in action: In 2009, past recipient West Shore Civic Association used Reduce Your Use funds to buy an energy efficient heating and cooling system. With the savings from energy bills, WSCA helped fund community events.
