With cold storms headed to town, First Choice Power, Oncor and the Red Cross are reminding Texans to be safe and energy efficient.
- Keep everything (rugs, curtains, cloths, furniture, etc.) at least three feet away from your heater, radiator or furnace.
- When using space heaters, follow all safety instructions such as keeping it on a level surface. When buying a new one, look for a space heater that has an automatic shut off if it is tipped over.
- Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.
- Turn off space heaters, stoves and fireplaces when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Seal all nooks, crannies and holes around windows or doors.
- Close vents and doors to rooms that aren’t in use.
- Use heavy curtains to keep cold air out at night. But keep them open during the day to let the sun help warm your home.
- Set ceiling fans to winter setting to help blow warm air down.
- Bring your pets indoors.
