Test drive a CFL

Now you are ready to begin saving money. Buy a couple different CFLs in different wattage and light colors to experiment with.  Try the lights in different fixtures.  See what works best for you. You can buy bulbs online or at any hardware store – most grocery stories now have them, too.


'Watt' did you say?

The wattage is the electric power required by the light bulb.  A 100-watt bulb uses more electricity than a 60-watt bulb. CFLs are sold just like incandescent bulbs, with a higher wattage indicating a brighter bulb. CFLs wattage numbers are lower because CFLs use less electricity. To help find the right size light to use, many CFL packages are marked with an equivalent wattage. 


CFLs: Where to Start

Incandescent light bulbs are simple because we already know about them. You buy 60-, 75- or 100-watt light bulbs. The only decision is to purchase clear or white glass light bulbs.   CFLs are new and look different. But after awhile, you will be purchasing CFLs without even thinking.
