First Choice Power Challenges Odessa Permian, Midland Lee High Schools to “Clash of the Cans” Food Drive Competition
ODESSA – The year’s most emotionally charged high school rivalry football game has Midland Lee High School and Odessa Permian High School pitted against each other for football glory and the bragging rights of being named the winner in First Choice Power’s Clash of the Cans competition. First Choice Power will award the school that collects the most canned food with a four-foot tall trophy. Each community is invited to support their team by bringing non-perishable food items to the football game on Friday, Oct. 22.
Clash of the Cans is part of First Choice Power’s Food First ™ program which aims to provide 1 million meals to help fight hunger in Texas.
“Texas ranks as the third state in most need when it comes to hunger,” said Brian Hayduk, president, First Choice Power. “These two schools share a long history of heated competition, and this year we are upping the stakes for a good cause.”
West Texas Food Bank will weigh the donations to determine the winner, which will be announced to the winning school. In addition to the Clash of the Cans trophy, the winning school will receive a $500 community involvement scholarship that will be given to a student with an exemplary record of community service.
“This food drive will enforce the spirit of good-natured competition between Midland Lee and Odessa Permian while allowing the students a great opportunity to give back,” said Augie Fernandes, executive director of the West Texas Food Bank. “We are thrilled to receive donations from both communities that will help us continue serving West Texans in need.”
Midland, Odessa and surrounding communities are encouraged to make non-perishable food donations at the football game between Odessa Permian and Midland Lee high schools Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. All the food collected will be donated to the West Texas Food Bank.
To further support the West Texas Food Bank, Midland and Odessa residents are invited to vote in a poll on First Choice Power’s Facebook page, facebook.com/FirstChoicePower, through which the company will award a $1,000 donation to the winning food bank each month.
