Year-long partnership provides support to 9.10.11 program provides tools for girls to fight hunger, conserve electricity
DALLAS, TEXAS – In partnership with First Choice Power, the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas’s 9.10.11 program, donated more than 24,000 meals to food banks and food pantries across North Texas. The program, kicked off on Sept. 10, 2011 (9.10.11), encouraged girls to do nine things to raise awareness about hunger, collect and donate 10 or more items of food to a local food pantry and celebrate “electric 11” by choosing 11 ways to make their homes more energy efficient through simple tips.
“The 9.10.11 program was such an exciting and enriching opportunity for our girls to learn about important issues, like fighting hunger and conserving energy, that are affecting their communities every day,” said Kimilee Gould, program manager for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. “Many parents and troop leaders have already expressed how much the girls enjoyed the project and how much they all learned through the process.”
All 2,000 girls who completed the 9.10.11 program will receive a special 9.10.11 patch, designed by First Choice Power. Girl Scouts troop 3510 collected the most food, 950 pounds, and won a pizza party for the entire troop. Gabby Gafford of Girl Scout troop 1747 collected 144 items, the most for an individual girl.
“First Choice Power is proud of our partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, helping educate our young leaders about hunger in our community led to them collecting more than 24,000 meals,” said Catherine Carlton, community relations manager at First Choice Power. “These donations will make a significant difference in the lives of countless Texas residents in need. We look forward to doing more together with 10.11.12 next year.”
First Choice Power’s partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas also included a College Journey program where 7-12th grade girls experienced the college life first-hand with a week-long stay at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. During the program, First Choice Power volunteers taught the Girl Scout curriculum including the issue of hunger in our communities, as well as led seminars on resume building, career options and how to take action to make a difference in the world around you.
