First Choice Power Donates 35,000 Meals to Texans in Need for Hunger Action Month
Company’s Food First ™ Program Supports Food Banks Throughout the State During September
IRVING – First Choice Power today announced the results of their Food First™ initiatives during September, a month deemed Hunger Action Month by Feeding America®. Through its many efforts to fight hunger, the retail energy provider has donated more than 35,000 meals in September through donations, food drives, employee volunteers and social media campaigns. To date, the company has provided more than 100,000 meals of its 1 million meal goal.
First Choice Power’s Food First™ initiatives during Hunger Action Month included:
- A poll that awarded a $1,000 donation to East Texas Food Bank because they received the most votes through Facebook.
- A “Clash of the Cans” food drive rivalry between Texas City and Galveston Ball high schools that resulted in 10,889 pounds of food.
- Social media campaigns that awarded one meal for each new follower on Facebook and Twitter, plus a $1,378 donation to Feeding America®, one for every follower of First Choice Power on social media.
- A canned food drive competition among the troops of the Texas Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America at the Big Country Balloon Fest that resulted in more than 2,000 pounds of food.
- Monthly employee volunteers at a soup kitchen, food pantry and Meals on Wheels.
“The canned food rivalry between Texas City and Galveston provided a fun, creative way for our community to raise awareness and fight hunger,” said Mark Davis, executive director of Gleanings From The Harvest/Galveston County Food Bank. “I was especially thrilled with the response from the students, who collected more than 10,000 pounds of food. It is the largest 10-day drive we’ve ever had at the food bank benefiting those most in need in our community.”
First Choice Power will continue supporting Food First™ this fall with a United Way canned food drive for employees, community events and the Facebook poll. The winner of the food bank poll each month will receive $1,000, a donation that will provide as many as 8,000 meals.
“We are so grateful for all the support we received from our customers, friends, followers and community partners,” said Catherine Carlton, community relations manager, First Choice Power. “Many food banks have had difficulty keeping their shelves full during these tough economic times, and we are thrilled to be able to provide food for more Texans in need.”
