Texas City wins Clash of the Cans Food Drive Competition, Football Game Against Galveston Ball High School
TEXAS CITY - First Choice Power announced Friday that, at their annual rivalry football game, Texas City High School and Ball High School raised more than 6,000 pounds of food to benefit the Galveston County Food Bank – Gleanings from the Harvest. In addition to their on-field matchup on Sept. 30, the schools competed off the field Sept. 19-29 for Clash of the Cans bragging rights and a four-foot tall trophy, awarded by First Choice Power. Texas City won both the food drive competition and football game, but First Choice Power supplied both schools with $1,000 scholarships.
Clash of the Cans is part of First Choice Power’s Food First™ program which aims to provide 1 million meals to help fight hunger in Texas. This is the second Clash of the Cans between Texas City and Galveston Ball High School. Last year, Galveston Ball won the canned drive, and Texas City won the football game.
“Texas ranks as the second state in most need when it comes to hunger,” said Gabe Sims, manager of First Choice Power’s Texas City Local Office. “We are excited to see students participating in such an important cause and to play a part in uniting communities through the belief that no one should go hungry.”
Galveston County Food Bank - Gleanings From The Harvest weighed the donations to determine the winner, which was announced during half-time of the Texas City High School at Galveston Ball football game on Sept. 30 in Galveston. A four-foot tall trophy was awarded to Texas City. Each school will award their $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who exhibits extraordinary an commitment to community service.
