First Choice Power Challenges Texas City, Ball High Schools to ”Clash of the Cans” Food Drive Competition
TEXAS CITY – Leading up to their annual rivalry football game, Texas City High School and Ball High School will be competing on and off the field Sept. 22 – Sept. 30 in a food drive to benefit Galveston County Food Bank - Gleanings From The Harvest. First Choice Power will award the district that collects the most pounds of canned food with a trophy (coupled, of course, with bragging rights).
Clash of the Cans is part of First Choice Power’s Food First ™ program which aims to provide 1 million meals to help fight hunger in Texas.
“Texas ranks as the third state in most need when it comes to hunger,” said Brian Hayduk, president, First Choice Power. “We are excited to see students participating in such an important cause and to play a part in uniting communities through the belief that no one should go hungry.”
Galveston County Food Bank - Gleanings From The Harvest will weigh the donations to determine the winner, which will be announced during half-time of the Galveston Ball High School at Texas City High School football game on Oct. 1 in Texas City. A four-foot tall trophy will be awarded to the winning community.
“I think it’s important for our community to have this food drive because a lot of people don’t have money to buy food and for us to be able to provide for them is an awesome feeling,” said Kerryona Price, a 10th grade student at Texas City High School.
Some of the Ball students recalled recent needs in their community.
“Since the hurricane we have found a greater need to help our community with necessities like food,” said Elisabeth Pean of the Galveston Ball High School Student Council. “We also appreciate all the donations our greater community provides.”
Galveston, Texas City and surrounding communities are invited to make canned food and non-perishable food donations at both high schools starting Wednesday, Sept. 22. To be included in the competition, donations must be made by noon on Thursday, Sept. 30.
Members of both communities are also encouraged to attend a pre-game tailgate at First Choice Power’s new local office, 915 20th Street North, Texas City, at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1. Canned food donations for Galveston County Food Bank - Gleanings From The Harvest also will be accepted at the tailgate.
