First Choice Power Accepting Applications from Texas Teachers for Classroom Energy Innovation Grants
Retail electric provider offers $50,000 worth of grants to help Texas students learn about energy
IRVING, TEXAS – Texas teachers have a few weeks left to apply for grants through First Choice Power. Now until Oct. 15, 2010, teachers in all subjects and grade levels can visit www.FirstChoicePower.com/Innovation and apply for Classroom Energy Innovation GrantsTM worth as much as $2,000 that can be used towards funding projects that use unique methods to educate students about energy. The Web page also includes a “share” tab that allows parents, students and friends to send information about the grants directly to their favorite teachers. In total, First Choice Power will allocate $50,000 for Classroom Energy Innovation Grants throughout Texas.
“Teachers often have to dip into their own pockets to implement fun, hands-on projects,” said Catherine Carlton, community relations manager, First Choice Power. “Through these grants, Texas teachers have the opportunity to get the supplies they need to teach kids about the important topic of energy: where it comes from, how to conserve it and alternative ways to use it.”
Past grant recipients have used their funds for everything from energy-themed art projects to producing informational videos. Barbara Ryza, a physics teacher at Bremond High School in Bremond, used the grant she received in 2009 to help her students build a solar-powered golf cart that they drove in the Bremond Polish Day Parade.
“I’m so grateful for First Choice Power’s grant funds because they allowed me to give my students hands-on experience with energy and technology,” Ryza said. “To see my students’ enthusiasm for the project and to watch them take pride in the result was very rewarding.”
Applications must be received by Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. Grant recipients will be announced in time for implementation during the spring 2011 semester.
