Mission Firefighters Raise $3,000 for Mission Food Pantry
MISSION, TEXAS – The Mission Food Pantry will receive much-needed donation thanks to First Choice Power and two Mission firefighters. Adrian Villareal won the recent tamale eating contest at the Mission Crimestoppers event by consuming a staggering 18 tamales in just 12 minutes. His colleague, Rene Alaniz, Lt. got second place with 16 tamales. The contest benefitted the Mission Food Pantry by inviting the community to pledge a donation for every tamale. First Choice Power then matched the donations for a total of $3,000.
“Our food pantry is experiencing a high level of need right now, so this donation couldn’t have come at a better time,” said X of the Mission Food Pantry. “The summer months put even greater pressure on families in need, so we appreciate the community’s support to ensure no one in Mission goes hungry.”
First Choice Power’s donation match is part of its Food First program which provides meals for those in need throughout Texas. The company partners with food banks across the state through donation drives, employee volunteerism, online promotions and community programs.
“First Choice Power is passionate about fighting hunger in the communities we serve and it adds an extra dose of excitement to partner with the community through a fun event such as the tamale eating contest,” said Shawn Babbs of First Choice Power. “We are thrilled to be able to help provide up to 9,000 meals for the Mission Food Pantry with this donation.”
Anyone can join First Choice Power in the fight against hunger by visiting the company’s Facebook page, clicking on the Food First tab and sharing the story that is featured each week during the summer. Each time the story is shared, First Choice Power will donate a meal to the featured food bank.
