First Choice Power Partners with Food Bank RGV to Feed Children this Summer
McAllen, TX- First Choice Power is continuing its Food FirstTM Summer Bag Program for a second year by partnering with six food banks and food pantries across the state to help fight childhood hunger. The first-of-its-kind program provides biodegradable plastic bags for each organization to fill with nutritious food to send home with children on summer weekends with a goal of providing 1 million meals in Texas.
Through a $10,000 donation from First Choice Power, thousands of meals will be distributed to children in Alton, Las Milpas and at the McAllen Boys & Girls Clubs. The program started in mid-June and will continue for a total of 10 weeks.
“With the current high level of demand at food banks, the summer bag program fills a gap where they often do not have enough resources,” said Catherine Carlton, community relations manager, First Choice Power.
“We believe every child deserves to have this basic need met so they can have fun just being kids this summer, without worrying where their next meal will come from.”
USDA summer food programs feed the children during the week but, there is a gap in meals on weekends. The Summer Bag Program helps the children get nutritious food during the weekend.
The contents change week to week but usually contain: two single-serving cereal pouches, two small orange juices, two fruit cups, two beef lasagna cans, two 8-oz pouches of 1 percent milk and trail mix and sunflower seeds for snacks.
